Guidance for sustainable mobilization of wood in Europe
Mobilisation efforts are necessary to meet the ambitious targets set for renewable energy and the growing demand for wood from industry. Examples of concrete measure provided by “Good Practice Guidance on the Sustainable Mobilization of Wood in Europe” aim to help reach successful and sustainable mobilisation of wood resources. Suggestions on the greater contribution of the forest owners are also given.
The recently published “Good Practice Guidance on the Sustainable Mobilization of Wood in Europe” provides an overview of measures to mobilize wood resources in sustainable ways. The publication provides recommendations for the forest owners’ contribution in the development of national strategies for renewable energy. It contains concrete measures and examples of good practice in infrastructures and logistics, silvicultural processes, markets as well as legal and fiscal instruments. Suggestions on improving forest owners’ organisations are also given. Sources of and mechanisms for financing these are also presented so as to help policy-makers and practitioners with the development of wood mobilization strategies and practices in their own region.
The guidance was produced jointly by the UNECE/FAO Forestry and Timber Section, FOREST EUROPE and the European Commission’s Directorate General Agriculture. It is a follow up to the workshop “Strategies for increased wood mobilisation from sustainable sources”, held in Grenoble in June 2009. CEPF was one of co-organisers of the workshop.
