The 3rd meeting of the MCPFE Open-Ended Ad-Hoc Working Group on sustainability criteria for forest biomass production, including bioenergy, will be held on 11 - 12 June 2009 in Uppsala, Sweden. Two background documents are being prepared for the meeting, on:

• gap analysis and suggested developments to accommodate the new demands for sustainable production of biomass for energy and the extent of the existing MCPFE tools,
• the potential negative implications of the present “sustainability criteria” of the EU Directive on promotion of use of energy from renewable sources.

Furthermore, a suggestion for amendments of the EU directive on Renewable Energy Schemes, and climate mitigation efficiency are included.
