‘Fitness Check’ of EU nature legislation: private forest owners call for balanced approach

In a joint letter submitted to the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Karmenu Vella, CEPF, Copa-Cogeca, ELO and USSE conveyed a number of concerns relating to the ‘fitness check’ of the EU Nature legislation (Birds and Habitats Directives), highlighting the need for an improved implementation, sufficient flexibilities and good governance in terms of forest owner and manager participation. Integrating LULUCF into the 2030 climate and energy policy

In October 2014 EU leaders agreed on the 2030 policy framework for climate and energy, with the headline target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions with 40% compared to 1990. It has also been decided that Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF) will be integrated into the 2030 greenhouse gas mitigation framework, meaning these sectors should contribute to the overall reduction target. European forest owners strongly question the benefits and practicability of the cascade use principle

In a joint statement, submitted to the Vice-President of the European Commission and relevant Commissioners, CEPF, Copa-Cogeca and ELO raised their serious concerns on the cascade use principle, question its general rationale and practicability. Read more »

New circular economy strategy under preparation

In the beginning of the year the European Commission withdrew their 2014 proposal for a circular economy package, stating that it was to be replaced by a new, more ambitious proposal by the end of 2015. Read more »

EU green light for €120 million new investments in circular bioeconomy projects

The European Commission releases €50 million of EU public money via the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU) leveraging €70 million of investments from industry into projects to boost the European bioeconomy. Read more »
