Commissioner Hogan exchanges views with European Parliament on forestry

Europe’s private forest owners show strong presence at the World Forestry Congress 2015
Hosted by the Republic of South Africa, nearly 4000 delegates gathered for the XIV World Forestry Congress (WFC 2015) in Durban from 7-11 September 2015, providing an excellent occasion for the wide global forest community to build a new vision for the future of forests and forestry in sustainable development at all levels. No tree species on IAS list of Union concern
With the Regulation on Invasive Alien Species (IAS) entering into force on 1 January 2015, a Committee of EU Member States representatives together with a scientific forum has been tasked to draw up a list of invasive alien species of Union concern. While the adoption of this list is expected for November this year, Europe’s forest owners will be relieved to know that for the moment no tree species have been listed. Read more »

A compendium of 28 country reports on forest ownership and its changes in Europe has been published by the European COST Action FACESMAP. Read more »

‘Fitness Check’ of EU nature legislation: private forest owners call for balanced approach
In a joint letter submitted to the Commissioner for Environment, Mr Karmenu Vella, CEPF, Copa-Cogeca, ELO and USSE conveyed a number of concerns relating to the ‘fitness check’ of the EU Nature legislation (Birds and Habitats Directives), highlighting the need for an improved implementation, sufficient flexibilities and good governance in terms of forest owner and manager participation.
