Global community gathered in Bonn for COP23 climate talks

On 6-17 November, the world’s nations met in Bonn, Germany for the 23rd annual “conference of the parties” (COP) under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which aims to prevent global warming. The focus of the meeting was to make progress on the rulebook for implementing the Paris Agreement. Read more

Press Release: Call for an ambitious EU Bioeconomy Strategy and Action Plan

The Confederation of European Forest Owners outlines the importance of an ambitious and high-level Bioeconomy Strategy and Action Plan for the shift towards a circular bioeconomy. An ambitious revision is needed in order to reach the global policy objectives identified in the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations and the Paris Agreement on climate change. More work is still needed on forestry issues in Renewable Energy Directive (recast) after European Parliament’s Environment Committee vote

After the vote of European Parliament’s Environment Committee on the Directive on the Promotion of the Use of Energy from Renewable Sources (RED recast) on 23 October, forest owners and managers see as a positive step the approach taken on the forest biomass sustainability as it endorses the European Commission’s proposal. European Parliament voted in favour of a LULUCF regulation better fit for purpose, but final results still remain uncertain

The European Parliament took a step forward in recognising climate benefits of forestry, but the EU Council agreed on a problematic approach on managed forest land in the proposal on Land Use, Land Use Change and Forestry (LULUCF). The final negotiations are currently underway and the decision on the LULUCF dossier is expected by the end of the year. Read more

Sustainable bioenergy discussed in the European Parliament

On 10 October 2017, EP Intergroup, CEPF and EUSTAFOR organised a breakfast event in the EU Parliament on the role of forest biomass in combating climate change and the impact of the Commission proposal for forest biomass sustainability criteria as part of the recast of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II).
