EU forests in the European Green Deal
The European Commission recently released European Green Deal with a set of policy guidelines that will bring the EU closer towards its transition to a climate-neutral continent by 2050. This Communication encompasses several initiatives which are key for the EU forest sector.
EC Press release: Commission report: more countries than ever hit by forest fires in 2018
The latest Commission report on forest fires reveals that wildfires destroyed nearly 178 000 ha of forests and land in the EU last year. While this is less than 1/6 of the area burnt in 2017, and less than the long-term average, more countries than ever suffered from large fires.
EU long-term vision for reducing GHG emissions in accordance with the Paris Agreement
The EU climate and energy strategy entitled “a clean planet for all, a European long-term strategic vision for a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate neutral economy” was published on 28 November 2018. The European Parliament resolution was adopted in March.
Joint statement COP24: Forests and forest sector should play an active role in climate change mitigation and adaptation
Forests represent a significant potential for climate change mitigation. The signing organisations call on the parties to the Paris Agreement to recognise in their conclusions of the COP24 the role of actively managed forests in climate mitigation and adaptation.
