On 1 January 2017, Malta took over the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU from Slovakia. Key priorities for the work in the coming six-month period include migration, the single market, security, social inclusion, Europe's neighbours and maritime issues.

Today, the European Commission presented proposal for new sustainability criteria for forest biomass, as a part of the Clean Energy package. European forest owners and managers are reiterating their concerns over the introduction of a new system for forest biomass sustainability.
