On forests, the Maltese Presidency will focus on ensuring that sustainable forest management and trade in legally produced timber are promoted at international level. They will strive to reach an EU position ahead of the 12th UN Forum on Forests in New York on 1-5 May and continue talks towards a legally-binding agreement on forests in Europe.

On climate and energy, the Maltese outlines the ambition to build on the momentum of the Paris Agreement and address the topic of climate change adaptation, also in the context of the ongoing work on the EU’s Climate Change Adaptation Strategy. Furthermore, the Presidency will advance the discussions on the Commission proposals on ESR and LULUCF can be seen below.

On the Commission proposals under the Clean Energy Package, the Maltese Presidency will focus on advancing the discussions on the proposals on Energy Efficiency. The Presidency will seek to initiate discussions on the remaining proposals, including the Renewable Energy Directive recast.

The next EU presidency trio will start on 1 July, when Estonia, prior to Bulgaria and Austria in 2018, assumes the position.
