Forestry strategy

European Forest Strategy

On 15 December 1998, the European Council adopted a Resolution on a Forestry Strategy for the European Union. The growing concern about coherence between the forest policies of the Member States and forest-related activities at EU level, as well as rising the profile of sustainable forest management in international policy debates and initiatives on sustainable development, were the main driving forces behind the adoption of the EU Forestry Strategy.

The implementation of the EU Forestry Strategy, as stated in the Council Resolution, is a dynamic process. The strategy encourages a participatory and transparent approach involving all stakeholders, while recognising the wide variety of ownership regimes within the Community and the important role of private forest owners. Today, this approach is becoming mainstream practice in national policy and decision making in the forest sector.

The Council Resolution on the EU Forestry Strategy asks the Commission to report on the implementation of the Strategy five years after its adoption, this report was elaborated and published on 10 March 2005The European Commission proposed in this regard to the European Council to “develop an EU Action Plan for Sustainable Forest Management, which should provide a coherent framework for the implementation of forest-related actions and serve as an instrument of co-ordination between Community actions and the forest policies of the Member States”.

CEPF contribute

CEPF and its member organisations have participated in the stakeholder process in the Commission since 1996 so that important family forest issues are included into the European Forestry Strategy and its report. Since 1998, CEPF have held the position of Chairman in the Advisory Group on “Forestry and including cork” which support the consultation process with forestry expertise. The Advisory Group, which the EC invite twice a year, has 48 seats in total. 9 seats are allocated to CEPF national member associations.
