Forest-based industryIn 1999 the EU communication on “the State of Competitiveness of the EU Forest-based and related industries” lead to the establishment of the FB-I (Forestry and forest based industries) Forum where forestry, the wood and wood-based sector meet on a common stakeholder platform at EU level.
Forest owners are as producers of the renewable material wood at the beginning of the wood-chain and essential partners in this co-operation.
The following facts show the importance of forest-based industry for Europe:
- Private Owners: 16 Million family forests owners – at 70 % of Europe’s forest
- GDP: 9 % of manufacturing sector
- Employment FBI: 3,7 Million
- Turnover FBI: 450 Billion Euros
- CO2 storage: One spruce stores 1,6 t CO2 in its life
- Clean water: 80 % of our water is cleaned by forest
CEPF co-operates with CEI-Bois (European Confederation of Woodworking Industries) and CEPI (Confederation of European Paper Industries) on issues of common concern to raise the awareness of decision makers on the challenges of the FB-I sector. The FB-I sector has the potential to offer solutions and support to current EU policy priorities, namely sustainable development, climate change and rural development, provided that its competitiveness is ensured and developed.
FBI CommunicationForest-based Industries including the forestry, woodworking, pulp, paper and board production, converting, packaging and printing industries pooled together in the FB-I working group on communications. It is the aim of the working group to communicate a positive image of the sector´s activities and promote the use of wood and wood-based products in Europe.
The label "Wood & Paper – Opportunities for Generations", as one working group’s product, will be awarded as a quality label to youth-related projects, carried out at national or European level, that inform and educate on the Forest based industries (www.f-bi.org)
