In the EU, forests are a home of wide variety of forest ecosystems and offer multiple ecosystem services to the society, biodiversity being one them. On the occasion of the International Day of Forests, Confederation of European Forest Owners (CEPF) would like to highlight the key role European forest owners play in enhancing forest biodiversity through sustainable forest management (SFM). This is essential to safeguard healthy and vital forest ecosystems, able to continuously provide a diverse spectrum of goods and services to society. As forest caretakers and the ones taking the management decisions on the ground it is essential that forest owners’ role is well acknowledged by the EU policy makers to secure their involvement and motivation.
At EU political level, biodiversity is high on the agenda. As part of the European Green Deal, the European Commission will put forward the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030, listing global targets to protect biodiversity, as well as commitments to address the main causes of biodiversity loss in the EU by 2021. According to the new Commission timeline, the strategy is expected on 29 April. CEPF provided feedback on Commission’s roadmap on the Biodiversity Strategy to 2030 published in December 2019. CEPF was pleased to participate in the spring edition of REVOLVE magazine and highlight our views on the article “The EU Green Deal, Biodiversity and Forests: Ingredients for Success”. The article offers deeper insight to the role of forest owners and SFM and explains the importance of holistic and balanced approach to forest management in the light of biodiversity and EU Green Deal.
