The workshop aims to examine and emphasize Copernicus' role within the framework of EU forest policy. The specific objectives include:

  1. Providing an overview of the policy context and current forest-related regulations, with updates on recent developments such as the EUDR and EU Forest monitoring.
  2. Clarifying the roles and interactions among stakeholders in various regulations.
  3. Evaluating existing capabilities and success stories of Earth Observation (EO) and Copernicus in the field of forestry, with a focus on practical examples of EO data usage.
  4. Identifying the needs of stakeholders and challenges related to EO.
  5. Deliberating on the future and potential developments in EO.

The workshop will feature speakers and participants from EU Policy DGs and agencies, both EU and non-EU National Public Authorities, Copernicus Entrusted Entities, the Research community, and the Private sector.

The workshop sessions are outlined as follows:

  • Welcome introduction
  • Session 1: Regulation on Deforestation-Free Commodities
  • Session 2: Regulation on Deforestation-Free Commodities/Private sector
  • Session 3: EU Forest Strategy & Forest Monitoring Regulation
  • Session 4: Forest Monitoring beyond Forest Regulations
  • Closing Keynote and Conclusions
