European forest owners welcome the Commission’s initiative to evaluate the LULUCF Regulation. The future LULUCF needs to steer EU climate policy where meaningful climate change mitigation is a driver and enabler of both the rural economy as well as a circular and forest-based bioeconomy.

Following the proposal of the European Commission for a Directive on Soil Monitoring and Resilience, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU have settled their positions. Trilogue negotiations can be expected to begin under the new legislative cycle.

Small4Good is an EU-funded Horizon Europe project, running from January 2024 to December 2027 which aims to equip small forest owners with digital and AI tools to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services. The goal of Small4Good is to understand the motivations of small forest owners and to help them creating business and management models tailored to local conditions.

Following its adoption and entry into force, the EU Deforestation Regulation’s (EUDR) implementation shall start on 30 December 2024 (or six months later for small and micro undertakings). As wood products are covered by the scope of the regulation, forest owners will be confronted with its new and burdensome requirements.

European forest owners take note of the decision of the Council to adopt the NRL. They do so with some concerns and now stand ready to take an active part in the national and regional level implementation, as they are the key partners in its deployment.

On 12 June 2024, CEPF participated in the European Association of Remote Sensing Companies (EARSC)’s annual event Expandeo to which key institutional actors and stakeholders interested in European earth observation participated to exchange on relevant EU policies and their impact.
