On 21 January, EU forests' representatives organised an event: “Seeing the forest for the trees, the multifunctional role of EU forests” in the European Parliament. Hosted by MEP Sarvamaa, it addressed the contribution of EU forests to EU’s climate and biodiversity objectives.

The Confederation of European Forest Owners (CEPF) welcomes the EC initiative to publish the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030 as part of the European Green Deal and the consideration about negative effects of climate change on species and habitats.

The European Commission recently released European Green Deal with a set of policy guidelines that will bring the EU closer towards its transition to a climate-neutral continent by 2050. This Communication encompasses several initiatives which are key for the EU forest sector.

The Political Guidelines for the new European Commission have a significant impact on the EU biodiversity policy framework since the EU Biodiversity Strategy to 2030 is expected to be delivered as part of the European Green Deal during the first 100 days of the new Commission.

Finland holds the Presidency of the EU Council for the second half of 2019. Forests, as one of the priorities of the Presidency, have been discussed in several meetings and events.

The EU Conference on “Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services" took place on 23-24 May 2019 in Brussels. It launched the stakeholder consultation for the evaluation of the Biodiversity Strategy to 2020.
