On 24 February 2021, the European Commission adopted the New EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change. With constantly increasing impacts of climate change, the Strategy is a timely tool for the EU in its efforts to make Europe, including its forests, climate resilient.

According to the European Commission forest fire report 2019 was the worst-ever year for forest fires around the world in recent history. Over 400,000 hectares of Europe's natural land was burnt and a record high number of nature protection areas were affected by wildfires.

“Partnership for protection of Bulgarian old-growth forests in Natura 2000” won the Natura 2000 European Citizens’ Award and “FIRELIFE - Hungarian forest fire prevention and training program” won the LIFE Award.

The Confederation of European Forest Owners (CEPF) welcomes the EC initiative to propose a new and more ambitious EU Adaptation Strategy as part of the European Green Deal and in support to the objectives of the EU Climate Law.

On 20 May 2020, ThinkForest webinar “Science Insights to the European Green Deal and Forests” brought together researchers, stakeholders, experts and NGOs to discuss the potential of the European forest-based sector to contribute to the Green Deal targets.

On 5 May 2020, CEPF, together with six organisations representing the European forestry sector, published a joint letter while the outbreak and spread of COVID-19 is having a significant impact on forests and forestry in a growing number of European regions.
