FOREST EUROPE's 10th Ministerial Conference Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Forest Management

The 10th FOREST EUROPE Ministerial Conference, held in Stockholm, Sweden, on 2–3 June 2026, brought together more than 130 participants from over 30 countries, including ministers, state secretaries, policymakers, researchers, international organisations, observer organisations and representatives of the forest sector.A key outcome of the Conference was the signing of the Stockholm Ministerial Declaration, "Sustainable Forests for Resilient Societies". The Declaration reaffirms the commitment of signatory countries to promote and implement the dynamic concept of SFM and to ensure that FOREST EUROPE remains fit for the future.

EC Communication on "Simplifying for Sustainable Competitiveness"

The Confederation of European Forest Owners (CEPF) welcomes the eighth environmental omnibus as a step to reduce compliance burdens while preserving environmental ambitions. European forest owners are natural allies in the green transition, but only if the regulatory framework supports rather than burdens them. The Communication references farmers and SMEs explicitly: forest owners deserve equal attention; and a cumulative impact assessment on their sector is long overdue.

Statement

Statement | EUDR Simplification Review: the case for further legislative action remains

The Confederation of European Forest Owners (CEPF) takes note of the publication, on 4 May 2026, of the European Commission's package for the simplification review of the EU Deforestation Regulation (‘EUDR package’), four days after the statutory deadline of 30 April. A thorough analysis of the full package is currently underway, and CEPF will share a comprehensive position in due course. However, first analysis of the package is already pointing to significant shortcomings.

CEPF welcomes the opportunity to contribute the ongoing call for evidence around the role of forestry and forests in the EU climate policy framework beyond 2030. National targets and flexibilities set strong links with the ongoing evaluation of the LULUCF Regulation: the main component of the EU climate policy architecture setting the role of forests and forestry in climate change mitigation on the road to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

EU Nature and Forest Directors’ meetings under the Cypriot Presidency

EU Nature and Forest Directors met in Paphos at the invitation of the Cypriot Presidency to discuss the implementation of the Nature Restoration Law, and climate change challenges for forest ecosystems, . Field visits showcased the Natura 2000 site of Ayios Georgios islet and Cedar Valley's fire prevention. CEPF representatives took part in both meetings.
