CEPF is extremely saddened to learn of the death of Peter deMarsh, Chair of the International Family Forestry Alliance, who was reportedly among the passengers of the Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed shortly after take-off from Addis Ababa on Sunday 10 March.

On 20 March 2019, MEP Nuno Melo (EPP, PT) and MEP Andrzej Grzyb (EPP, PL) hosted a conference on Climate Change and Forest Fires in Europe. The conference was jointly organised by CEPF, COPA and COGECA, ELO and EUSTAFOR.

On 28 March 2019, the European Parliament voted to establish taxonomy for sustainable finance. The Members of the Parliament rejected the proposals to rank all economic activities according to their social and environmental impact.

Last December, the European Commission published a mid-term review on the implementation of the EU Forest Strategy. The report provides insights on progress in the implementation of each of the eight priority areas identified by the Strategy.

The EU climate and energy strategy entitled “a clean planet for all, a European long-term strategic vision for a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate neutral economy” was published on 28 November 2018. The European Parliament resolution was adopted in March.

On 2 April, the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRI Committee) of the European Parliament has adopted its reports on CAP Strategic Plans Regulation. This Regulation encompasses rural development interventions, which are of high importance for the forest sector.

During the NetworX Conference, Luc Bouvarel from Fransylva presented how French forest owners have been supported to develop concerted simplified forest managements plans. This is the result of an efficient collaboration showing the importance of networking in rural areas.

The ceremony of the Rural Inspiration Awards, recognising inspiring initiatives funded by EAFRD, awarded “Tiges et Chavées” project in LEADER category. This project promotes sustainable management of small privately-owned forests in the Walloon region in Belgium.

Following the devastating fire that partially destroyed Note Dame Cathedral on Monday 15 April in Paris, the Confederation of European Forest Owners (CEPF) expresses its support and solidarity to France.

On 25 - 26 April 2019, the European Commission organised a conference “Our Forests, Our Future” to analyse and discuss opportunities and challenges for enhancing the contribution of the forest sector to the main EU priorities.

The EU Conference on “Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services" took place on 23-24 May 2019 in Brussels. It launched the stakeholder consultation for the evaluation of the Biodiversity Strategy to 2020.
