Forest management in the climate crisis: Insights from the PEFC Forest Forum 2024 in Paris

On 16 May 2024, CEPF participated in the PEFC Forest Forum 2024 which gathered nearly 200 participants, over 40 internal & external speakers and it focused on forest management amid the climate crisis. During the session "Regulations and Beyond: Delivering Impact on the Ground", CEPF Vice President, Luc Bouvarel, discussed the implications of recent European Commission legislation on forest management.

Small4Good: Sustainable multifunctional management by small forest owners

Small4Good is an EU-funded Horizon Europe project, running from January 2024 to December 2027 which aims to equip small forest owners with digital and AI tools to enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services. The goal of Small4Good is to understand the motivations of small forest owners and to help them creating business and management models tailored to local conditions.

European forest owners welcome the Commission’s initiative to evaluate the LULUCF Regulation. The future LULUCF needs to steer EU climate policy where meaningful climate change mitigation is a driver and enabler of both the rural economy as well as a circular and forest-based bioeconomy.

Joint Statement | With less than 100 days left and no clear implementation tools, European primary producers and various industries urge a delay of the entry into application of the EUDR

Since the publication of the Commission's proposal of the EU Deforestation and Forest Degradation Regulation (EUDR) on 17 November 2021, primary producers have supported the objective of the EUDR. However, it has become obvious that key parts of the final text that remained unclear are to be interpreted so strictly that their implementation will lead to a high level of administrative burden and costs. It will therefore not be possible to implement the EUDR in practice.

European Commission Proposes 12-Month Extension for EU Deforestation Regulation Implementation

2 October 2024
The European Commission published on 02 October a proposal for a 12-month extension for the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Responding to feedback from international partners and European stakeholders, the proposed extension would delay the regulation’s application to December 2025 for large companies and June 2026 for micro- and small enterprises.

European primary producers and various industries welcome the European Commission’s proposal to extend the implementation period of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) by an additional 12 months. While we fully support the regulation’s objective to combat global deforestation, it is crucial to ensure that it is implemented under the right conditions to be effective and feasible.
