Forests are essential to global food security, supporting billions with food, livelihoods, and ecosystem services. As efforts to protect them continue, sustainable practices remain key to ensuring their benefits for future generations.

Poland took over the Presidency of the Council of the EU on 1 January 2025. In its priorities, the Polish Presidency has outlined its commitment to strengthening the sustainability and resilience of Europe’s forests through key legislative and policy initiatives.

In ComENVI and ComAGRI of the European Parliament, the co-rapporteurs presented their draft report and MEPs tabled amendments on the legislative proposal on forest monitoring.

On 25 March 2025, CEPF met with Jessica Roswall, Commissioner for environment, water resilience and competitive and circular economy to exchange on EU forest-related policies at the beginning of the new EU political mandate.

Sweden has officially started its two-year Chairmanship of FOREST EUROPE, focusing on sustainable forest management, policy stability, and emerging forest issues. The Liaison Unit Sweden (LUS), led by Ms. Ebba Henning Planck, will guide these efforts, with key priorities including the State of Europe’s Forests report and preparations for the 10th Ministerial Conference.

On 23 April, Commissioner Jessika Roswall hosted a high-level roundtable on the topic of nature credits and biodiversity certification. The discussion aimed to address market development and identify drivers for demand.

The final annual meeting of the HoliSoils project took place in Marseille 8-10 April where researches shared the most important findings of the five-year project.
